RRNA/SRNA clinical problems

Published

I am one of those RRNA having some difficulty in my clinicals especially difficult intubation cases , does any one else has similar issues ? your thoughts and experiences are greatly appreciated

what "issues" specifically are you having....and how far along in your program are you??

I have completed my theory part of the course , 4 months in to the clinicals ,for difficult cases Iam not able to insert the intubation tube since I am a student if not successful in first attempt supervising CRNA or MDA will take over and insert themselves , that make me nervous next time . Also the overall attitude of some of the CRNAs and MDA are not that great (some of them are very good towards students ) Once a CRNA told me some time he insert the tube by experience with out seeing , also my left hand is not strong to lift heavy patients , any ideas to improve intubation skills , your thoughts ?

As a CRNA who works with students frequently I'll give students a second chance if the patient was not in need of a RSI, is unstable, truly looked difficult or is desaturating. As long as we can ventilate, I'll usually give at least a second but not always a third try. Just use proper technique and most CRNAs will allow a repeat try. Intubating is rarely a matter of strength, it is however a matter of practice. Keep your arm as straight as your shoulder muscles can participate that way. that position leads you to stand back a bit which should help also.

try a search for intubating in titles on the crna board. there are some good discussions with tips

Here's one to get you started. It discusses using muscle or technique for intubating. Many feel that generally you just need to perfect your technique over time.

WntrMute is right. It is not about strength, but it is about technique. Make sure the table is at the right height, namely the xyphoid process, and it will eliminate the need to feel like you need a lot of strength to lift.

also w/ heavy patients - really watch for the "sniffing" position - the first 1/2 of my schooling i had it all wrong - and it made obese patients more difficult for me - ask one of the CRNA's you trust and want to emulate to show you -

the farther in you get and the more they trust you - they will give you those 2nd chances..ask them what you need to change in your technique as well...

there are great posts on these things in this forum.

Thanks a lot for your opinions and the link about intubation discussion , when I see other students also had similar issues little relief.. I have improved my techniques a lot within last four months If the supervising CRNAs and MDs give little consideration I will be alright some of them are so mean towards students , did any one else feel similar way ?:imbar
