RPN or RN?

Published

I am a first year student here at a Southern Ontario College. I completed my Pre-Health Sciences Nursing program with a 3.0 GPA first semester, and then upgraded. If things go as planned, I will get my Pre-Health Nursing certificate with a 3.5 GPA or higher.

I applied to both RPN, and BSCN- RN program. As of right now, I got accepted for RPN, and am wait-listed for RN.

My Questions were:

1. Do you think I have a chance of getting accepted with a 3.5 GPA being wait listed for RN? (From word of mouth, I have learned there are approximately 50 spots available)

2. I know for a fact I want to do RN; should I take a year off, and upgrade some courses if I do not end up getting accepted, or should I complete my first year RPN and then re-apply to RN for September 2015? Or possibly do the RPN, and then a bridging program after wards?

I am unsure as to which route to go. Any advice would be more than appreciated. Thank you!

If you're sure that you want to be an RN then that's the path that you should pursue. The bridges from RPN to RN take 2-3 years full time or 4-5 years part time after you've become an RPN.

If your going to take a year off to upgrade, u might as well just do RPN since the amount of time will be the same in the end, plus you will get an extra diploma in case you ever need to look for jobs as a RPN. The only problem with this route is that you must maintain a high enough GPA to get into the bridging program.
