Rounding up on IV med cal questions

Published

I had thought the only rounding you do pertaining to all this IV stuff was in regards to the size of the drops (gtt)...obviously you can't give a partial drop to a patient. However, we had our second semester med calc test last week and I did pass...but the instructor marked one wrong. The answer I came up with was something like 29.75 mL/hr (not sure if that's the exact numerical value and I these numbers in as an example - but the answer was absolutely/certainly in terms of mL/hr) and I left it that way without rounding up. I would think that's significant enough to leave in 'unrounded terms' (if that's the right way to say it???). Should I have rounded that up? As I said, I passed and wasn't about to make a stink of it - but I was just wondering...

Yes, you should've rounded it to 30ml/hr. At least that's how it's done at my school. Just like the gtts, it's hard to give 29 and 3/4 of a ml.
