Rochester NY--Rochester Psychiatric Center

Just wondering if anyone on here works at RPC? I am seriously thinking of looking there for a job and just wanted to know what the thoughts of others who work there are. I am currently a home health nurse, but all the patients I see have mental illness. I never thought I would like this population, but to my surprise I love it. Thanks

Haven't worked at RPC but am working at Strong on the Behavorial Health side. Just fyi RPC isnt the only place you can do psych at in the Rochester area. Also RGH. Then again you'll probably see a lot more truly sick(psychiatrically) patients at RPC. But they're are state so they do mandate.

Good Luck!

What is mandate? Do you mean mandated overtime? I do know someone who works there, but he is not a nurse and he said that they just did away with that. But like I said he is not a nurse, so I am not sure if he would really know what goes on for nurses. Do you think that if I went and talked to someone there they would have to tell me that they may have mandated OT? I am so confused as to what to do with my nursing career. I am so bored with my current job, but the flexibility of it is great and I have a baby at home. Sometimes I just feel like I should be doing more with my education.

Yeah I meant like mandating you to stay over time. I know they said they were done with that and would be interested to know how. I have a co-worker who works there as an LPN just part time and she says she has to stay pretty much every time she works. It's very much an option though considering their benefits are really good and if they really are done with mandating (doubtful) that would be something I'd look into. Definitely something I would ask at an interview. Thats one of the reasons I didnt go to work there. I'm also a grad student and couldnt risk being mandated.

Anyway let me know what you found out! Good luck!

Hi, I work at RPC. Have many yrs. of working there besides other state facilites. I can tell you you don't want to work there!! Very demeaning and unnecassry stress for all staff not just nurses. Yes, there is mandated O.T. The Pef union and nurses from state facilities did petetion for no mandated o.t. but if the nurses are charge nurses on the wards and there is no outside agency hired to fill in(had outside agency many yrs. ago for fill in but didn't work out for reasons I'm sure you can figure out) for call ins etc. Then who is going to fill the spot?

Some nurses quit before orientation is over or before probation is finish.

I wouldn't count on honesty in interview either. I was lied to in my transfer interview. After I started I asked my supervisor why he lied to me. He said I was over qualified for the job and they needed people w/ my experience ad training. I'm close to retirement and when I did try to transfer back out to another facility got bad rep.

I've worked closely w/ both SMH psych and RGH. I wouls reccomend either of them.

Not trying to be a downer but just want the truth out. Wish I had something like this to for someone to warn me about it. I would have stayed where I was and retired there.
