?? for RNs working w/ ob techs

Iam a medical asst actually a stay at home mom for a few years now. Before I worked @ a gen. surg offc as mgr. I was thinking of going back to school to get my RN, but turns out it's going to be harder than I realized. 26y.o I'll have to retake the SATs and the NLN and algebra which I haven't seen in years. I would love to work in the OB dept. but have gotten a little discourage and nervous that I want be able to do it now, it's been awhile since I've done anything but be a mom. I was wondering if you think OB tech might be a good place to start and exactly what do they do at your hosp.'s. and will I be able to do that on a part time basis, i'm not ready to go back to work full time, not sure I ever will unless have to.

ps have any of you got your RN degree on a part time schedule, I just don't want to leave my kids all day to go to school.

I was thinking I would work at night a couple of nights a week so I wouldn't miss too much time with them

Take one course a semester. Be gentle with your self. Start off getting to know the school or college. Take an English Course sign up at the college as undecided major but take nursing pre requsites. A little at a time. When you have one course down then take two courses. Rome wasn't built in a day. There are many ways to achieve your goal. :) :)

I am in a BSN program part-time (because I'm still primarily a stay at home mom). I took almost all of my prereqs online in 2002-2003. I am enjoying school but it's hard because my husband wants me to stay home & doesn't make things easy for me to say the least. My goal is CNM (which almost sounds like a laugh after a few difficult days lately). Personally I'd skip the tech thing unless you want to do it as a means to decide if this is the right path for you. It would be good experience but it just adds time to your goal, or takes more time away from family if you do it with school. If I were childless, I'd be trying to get that type of job right now with school, but not with the kids. But that's just me, everyone has a different situation. :)

I don't know if we're talking about the same kind of OB techs here. Our OB techs are scrub techs, which requires a degree. So if you're going to go to school for that and you were considering nursing, you might as well do nursing school, kwim?

Anyway, our OB techs scrub for csections, and help with odd jobs when not in the OR, stocking rooms, setting up/breaking down delivery carts, assisting the RN as needed.
