RN transfer MI to NY

Published

Hello! Wondering if anyone has any recent experience with license transfer? I will be moving from MI to New York (near Albany). Looks like I will need to take a couple online courses and fill out paperwork. Does anyone have any links to sites RE: these classes. Also looking for recommendations for a new job near the Albany area. I have been a nurse for 2 years in med/surg, mostly working nights. I will be looking for a part time or contingent position with minimal weekends. Thank you in advance!

I'm actually in the process of transferring my license from KY to NY. I put in my application a few weeks ago and am still waiting, it's 6-8 weeks from the time they get ALL of the paperwork, so for me it likely won't be approved until the end of August/beginning of September. You have to fill out an application, send transcripts or have the school you graduated from certify your education, and do NURSYS license verification if your state participates in it. Here's links to the classes, they're in the $30-35 range each:

Child Abuse

Infection Control

Good luck!!

Did the Board of Nursing in New York give you any information? Did you already apply and found out you couldn't get a license without specific classes? If so they should have told you what they are and then you can just Google for the schools that offer them online. Finding a part-time position with minimal weekends might not be so easy because no one wants weekends lol but hope it works out!

Oh I just ad what Newbie wrote and now it makes sense on what classes you need. Forget what I said, good luck!

Thank you got the info! I have not talked to the board of nursing. I just found out last week that we will be moving, so just some late night google research is where I've gathered my info... Do you know if contingent openings are rare? I'm not seeing very many online... I work every 3rd weekend now and every 3rd holiday, which is pretty common in Michigan. Is this the case in New York?

I did hear it could take 8 weeks, was hoping that wasn't the caseí ½í¹ƒ Keep me

updated on how long it takes. Thanks again and good luck!

Just wanted to update you that I got my license number today! It surprisingly took about a month, sent in the paperwork in mid-July and had the final piece done last week (apparently I'd forgotten to check the "no, I don't have a criminal history" boxes on the application). Also, to answer your other question- the hospital I am going to be starting at next week requires every other weekend and every other holiday (but holidays with an "eve" count together as one holiday for my unit, so Christmas Eve and Christmas one year and neither the next).

Good luck!
