Im doing an activity for my class. I would like two or three opinions from RN's for the following questions.

-Vision 2025 and beyond in terms of healthcare system...what do you see?

-In your vision, what are the positive sides of healthcare system in future

-What do you think we can do NOW to make the positive side true?

-What are the negative sides for the future of healthcare system in future

-what can we do now to avoid those bad things in the future?

thanks so much!

Why don't you tell us what you think and what vision 2025 is?

This is your first post and you are asking a random group of strangers claiming to be Canadian nurses for their opinion.

Many of us will be retired by then and are only worried about our pensions and how healthcare will serve us in our golden years.

Tell us something about what you are asking.

Oh, and there are a lot of LPNs who post here and since you are only asking RNs for their opinions you are losing a valuable of group of nurses thoughts. But then I'm an LPN and shouldn't even be responding to you.

Not sure why the above responder has to be a negative Nancy, you are asking honest questions that should elicit some interesting responses from nurses everywhere! I will answer a couple for you.

I believe in 2025 nursing will become even more technologically advanced than it is now, if that's possible. A large portion of bedside nursing has turned into mastering computer skills unfortunately, and I believe that trend will keep going.

I think a positive side of the future of healthcare in general will be greater patient involvement, I think patients are being held more and more accountable for their health and that will continue to grow.

We will unfortunately continue to nurse the computer, not the patient. Technology has created positives and negatives for nursing.

Also, the de-skilling of nursing will continue because, despite what we're taught, health care is about the bottom line, not quality care. Ask anyone working at the bedside.

We will continue to see fewer RNS and LPNS at the bedside. Instead, one RN or one LPN will lead a team of health care aides, and health care aides will also be licensed.

Fewer positions in acute care, as the shift to home care and palliative care predominates. This is already the trend.

I'll be retired in 16 years and hopefully still healthy.

Sorry if I offended any of you LPN's or other healthcare practitioners! I would love your opinions as well regarding those questions! I only said RNs because since I am new to the site I thought that considering the vast ray of nursing specialties and positions I had to be specific. I would also love any healthcare practitioner who is retired OR currently working to give me input. Do not take my post as something negative, its not really nice. Anyways, since one of you wanted me to answer the same question I would gladly answer it. This is of course not just for my benefit, but I wanted to learn from the rest of you and I hope you all learn something from it.

-Vision 2025 and beyond in terms of healthcare system...what do you see?

-In your vision, what are the positive sides of healthcare system in future

more technology, more medications, more healthcare practitioners.

-What do you think we can do NOW to make the positive side true?

-more education, more research, making sure that the technology is safe and beneficial.

-What are the negative sides for the future of healthcare system in future

increased taxes, increased spending on healthcare, more risks so increased risk of safety of patients and healthcare providers themselves, lack of jobs possibly if too much providers (which I doubt)

-what can we do now to avoid those bad things in the future?

-to avoid increased taxes id say even showing patient's a bill each day they are at the hospital will make them aware just how much they are costing Canada and us citizens. Have someone at the business line invest in hospitals. make homebased hospital care to save money (less seniors in hospital, more in home), invest in ITs your move or some kind of safety program to keep the nurses practicing safely.

please read my latest post! I did not mean to offend any healthcare providers. I would love LPNs and others opinions on this topic, the more the better!

@ joanna73. Thank you for your response! I see your point that there home care and palliative care predominates. And yes I see that there is de-skilling of nursing, in my point of view I see that there are so many types of nursing that it can be hard to determine who is capable of what, i think that as long as roles are defined and delegated appropriately and put known to public through social media then hopefully we can all get along...and instead of de-skilling, instead have nurses use their full potential, use of their knowledge to contribute to society whether it be at bedside, community etc. After all nurses are humans with all these science and holistic skills...without them I cannot see patients getting better. Nurses are at the front line, they are everywhere, they are needed. I just wish we could all step up and literally voice out who we are and why we are valuable, as leaders, not followers.

You will soon learn that health care is about cost savings. For years, the Provinces have been eliminating nursing positions in order to balance their budgets. This will likely continue.

Health care aides cost less than RNS and LPNS, and with the shift to community care fewer nurses will be in the mix. Nurses are needed, many more than we currently have are needed.....but the reality is cost.

I see. That's quite scary. I don't want to graduate as an RN and end up losing my job. Hm. What nursing positions have they eliminated so far? Do you think LPNs and RNs will end up losing their jobs too? or will they just get paid less?

Over the years, RN and LPN positions have been eliminated. In addition, when nurses retire, often those positions are not replaced.

Ah okay. Well I just think that RNs and LPNs can keep their position jobs as long as they find their place in the community. Because like, people are retiritng there is increased seniors therefore more demand for nurses should follow. I doubt that acute care will disappear, heck people get into accidents and injuries etc, technology cannot take over everything, human brain is needed. aha. at least thats what I think.

When you talk about business investing in healthcare are you advocating for the end of universal healthcare for Canadians?

Or or are you thinking of them making charitable donations to pay for biuildings and equipment! The Robbins and Hole families donated millions here in Alberta and only wanted the buildings to carry their names.

Seniors don't want to pay for home are. The generation before mine and Joanna's in particular. They remember the days of total funding and resent company's. Those who can afford for profit care, expect the world and treat their healthcare provider like slaves.
