RN Students

Published

What do you think about nursing students? Our facility just brought in "students", but they are already's RN's. Seems to be working out pretty well...no hand holding, etc.:p

They are RN's who are enrolled in a Nurse Residency Program. Apparently you have to already be an RN to participate. Has anyone had any experience with a program like this before? They are going to receive their Masters at the end of the program.

I didn't mean to offend anyone with the hand holding comment, had a rough day with some students. Of course, I remember when I was the student causing the rough day!

Speculating,

My preceptorship is 6 weeks including one week of orientation. I'm starting Tuesday and ending in mid March.

I talked with my charge nurse today and she said it is rare that new grads need any longer on our floor (urology/dialysis/med-surg), although it does happen to be permitted to go as long as 8 weeks. If you need longer, they consider that a re-evaluation period and decide if the nurse needs a new assigned floor.

As far as students, I too would not be here without the guidance of great mentors and nurses throughout my schooling. I say bring 'em all, you gotta start somewhere.
