RN school wait lists in BC

Published

First off, hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and stumbled on it while spending hours trying to research my alternatives.

I'm in Vancouver, BC (permanent resident) planning to go for my RN. I'm a mature student with 19 credit hours from a US university, but most of those credits are liberal arts, so I'm not sure what will really count except for the math and English. I know I'll have to take the A&Ps and Psychs- biology was much more than 5 years ago, but I did make an A! lol

When I first started looking, I found that VCC has a relatively new RN BSN program and I spoke to the academic advisers who told me that there was no wait list. I got approved for my student loan, requested all my transcripts and registered as a student. Today (only a week later) I spoke with a different adviser who informed me that not only is there a wait list, but that there are 49 students on it and that they will only be taking 24. VCC only has a fall intake so she told me that if I'm "lucky" I could get in the class of 2012 but likely 2013! ack. I suppose the only positive there is that they are a first come, first serve school so I will eventually move up the list for sure.

In the meantime, the adviser suggested I apply to multiple schools in the Lower Mainland, and choose one to attend for prerequisites while biding my time, hoping for one of them to eventually send me an acceptance. I'm sure many of you are in the same boat. I applied to Douglas and will probably actually attend there because it is much closer to home than VCC, plus they do two intakes per year so that's a plus. Will anyone be attending the Douglas psych or A&P for summer 2011? Would be nice to know someone going in.

So I guess the purpose of my post is to first make contact with anyone else currently waiting out their time, and also to compare any up-to-date info you have on wait lists. As far as Douglas' preferential placement goes, with a max number of points at 14, what is a "good" number of points to have to be competitive? I'm thinking I will have around 8. >

Thanks for reading!

what do u have for post secondary? Do u know if they are mailing out the results by the 4th, or should we recieve them by the 4th?

Did u take the chem 083 in Jan 2011?

I actually finished a biology degree already. I have no idea how/when UFV will give the results, although they did mention in one of the information sessions that the nursing department forwards a list of accepted candidates to the admissions office and they would "send out the letters".

One girl who got an interview said we should have the results by the forth, I thought I heard them say they are mailing out the results on the 4th, so I don't know now. I will call on monday and ask.Did u do the A&P, or stats, or any other electives?

I'm guessing that the final admission decision for UFV will show up online by Nov 4. I did do stats, several psych courses, and I think 3 liberal arts credits. But like I said my University grades were fairly average.

Does anybody else who got accepted at BCIT know what's up with the WHMIS requirement? Did they ever mention this before?

well, I heard they only look at the prereq's, so u need not worry about the other courses you have taken. I wonder how many people got interviews for the 32 seats, did u get an interview letter along with the information session letter, or after?

I heard nothing about WHMIS until this letter from BCIT so I dont know. Guess I'll be taking it! Also I have my CPR but got it just a little over a year ago. Its valid for 3 years but do they want it done every year including after the first year or every year after the 3 years? Hmmm what other questions do I have... SO many. I feel like waiting for the Dec 15th info session is too long !!! Okay I'm kidding, after this ridiculous wait I can do some more, in a less anxious way. Congrats to everyone who have made it in and good luck to the rest! Miss Thang - UFV hasn't contacted me in forever!

Karlyac, did u get an interview at UFV? Congrats for BCIT !!!! 3 years is too cool. you must be sooooo happy. Now, if i were u, I wounld enjoy everyday like it was your last,lol....Nursing in 3 years is pretty intense, u will wish you enjoyed these days!!!!! At least u will know you will have a MERRY CHRISTMAS

I did get an interview at UFV but I never actually went... Oops. When I went for the info session I just couldn't handle how far the drive was for me. And thank you! From the looks of it UFV is making everyone wait for the last minute.. They haven't even sent me a rejection letter yet for not attending. It still says pending!

I guess I'll be doing WHMIS too then. As for the First Aid, they make you redo it every year. So if you took a course Oct 2011 you would have to recertify by Oct 2012 even if its supposed to be valid for 3 years. Miss Thang I got the interview letter along with the info session letter.

St Johns Ambulance offers WHMIS online!

Specializes in Neurology and Cardiology.

where on the ufv site does it show your application statues? What does yours currently say Miss Thang? I am V. confused about it, and have only my online application to depend on as I am currently out of country! any info about ufv would be awesome :)

invictus----go under "student information","admissions","applications to ufv","continuous application", and your application summary is there...i am hearing from others that we will know by nov 4th, but i thought they are mailing letters on nov 4th. i am going to call on monday. anyone have any info at all, in regards to ufv?
