27yrs out of nursing, and returning!!! Would like any and all info from others on best places for "young 56yr" olds to work!! Charlotte area, have not decided on specialty yet, did Pedi ICU for 10yrs, many yrs ago!

Best shoes? Crocs? Dress codes? Best stethoscope to purchase??

Anything you think I should know?!?

Currently finishing the AHEC RN refresher course out of UNC Chapel Hill.

PLEASE.....Tell ALL !!!!!!

Congratulations on returning to the profession!! I have worked with several returning RNs, most were returning after 17-20 years and worked with me on Med-Surg though some floated to other units. Many hospitals offer a returning-RN preceptorship to ease back into things.

As for dress code, definitely wait to find out which hospital you'll be at before purchasing scrubs. The hospitals in my area now require either all-white or navy pants with white top. So much for all the almost-new colorful scrubs I already own from previous jobs!

Shoes are really individual. A lot of people wear crocs, some people say crocs don't have enough support and prefer Danskos. Others prefer to wear sneakers. I'd recommend whatever you are most comfortable in.

Stethoscopes, too, are individual. You will see quite a range of them out on the floor. I have a basic "no frills" Littman that costs about $50. Some nurses (especially on cardiac units) have more advanced stethoscopes. You'll also see many nurses with the most inexpensive stethoscopes, especially if they've had better quality ones "disappear" in the past. Again, get whatever works best for you and the unit you're on.

Anyway ... best wishes and congratulations again on returning to nursing!! Keep us posted how it goes!!
