RN "Desk Jobs" - Need Advice

I am in need of some advice. I am currently working in an acute care setting & am utterly miserable. I personally feel that I would be better suited in a priviate practice or behind a desk doing audits, etc. But here is my question - how do I even start looking for these positions? I am a newer RN & have my ASN degree. I cannot have any more sleepless nights dreading work. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a "desk job" and I am an LPN. I would suggest taking some classes in coding, medical record management or nursing informatics. Also, you could check with the medical records department of your hospital to see if they have any courses available on coding, Medicare or general insurance billing regulations.

Also, educate yourself on the upcoming Medicare RAC audits. Many facilities are putting together special teams to deal with these audit entities. You just might find a place in the auditing world on the hospital side, or even working for one of the many subcontractors who will be performing the audits.

You could be a case manager for an insurance company...I know an RN who works from home doing this and makes GREAT money. She hadn't been out of school barely two years before she acquired that job. You could be a phone rep for a health information, advice referral service. A few hospitals in my area have a health information number that the public can call for questions about any health issues they or someone they know are having. The nurses answer the phones and offer advice, options and referrals. Maybe a home care agency would need someone with a nursing background for a desk position?
