RN moving to Austin - advice on hospitals & pay range

I am moving to Austin/Round Rock this fall from Phoenix. From what I have seen, it looks like most of the hospitals are on the north half of the metro area. Is the commute from Round Rock a decent one? Can anyone help me with opinions on hospitals to work at? I primarily work ICU/ER but also do some med-surg and rehab. Also would appreciate any info on RN pay at hospitals and agencies. In Phoenix I am making $27/hour on night shift as hospital staff, $35/hour doing agency rehab/med-surg, and $40-$42/hour doing agency ICU/ER. I realize that I won't make that much in Austin, but would like to have an idea if possible.

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Hello, welcome to beautiful Central Texas!!! Austin is an awesome city. The commute from Round Rock to Austin is kind of brutal at peak times. IF you were on nights, evenings, no problem. Since ALL the hospitals in the area are either St. Davids (HCA): South Austin, North Austin, St Davids main, Round Rock, Georgetown and their surgery centers, AND Seton (catholic) Run: Seton Main, Brackenridge, Childrens, Seton Northwest and Highland Lakes. Those are the two main employers in the hospital arena, so benefits are going to be about the same. Some people love one or the other, some people work at both! I recommend Georgetown or Round Rock Hospitals to you. Commuting is hard, parking is hard and pay is going to be about the same. "Go North Settlers" and yee shall miss a lot of traffic!! I belive both St Davids and Seton are both offering sign ons this time of year. Salary is dependant on PRN or PT or FT. If your private message me, I can give you specifics on salary in the area. Go to the websites of St Davids and Seton, you will find LOTS of jobs waiting for your arrival.. Hope that helps..

Hi we just moved to Round Rock from CA a few weeks ago. I took a position with St. David's, but was offered a slightly higher wage from Seton. I have to tell you, I've taken a HUGE paycut by moving here but I've only been a nurse for 3 years. From what I remember, Phoenix salaries are considerably less than San Diego. So, you pay cut may not be as severe. So far, we LOVE Round Rock and the traffic is a breeze compared to what we are used to :) Good Luck with your move!
