RN job w/out NJ license

Published

I just graduated from a RN program. I know in NYS you can work as a new grad for a few months w/o a license while you are preparing to take the NCLEX. Is this also possible in NJ?

Also to add to this question I was wondering, when in school (NJ) can you be licensed in NY as well - do you even need to be licensed in NY to work in NY - sorry if I am slightly confusing (ultimately I am in schooling In NJ and want to work in NYC, is it ideal to be licensed in both NY&NJ or is it required or does it not matter. Thanks :D

If you want to work in NY, get licensed in NY. Don't bother with the added expense and CEU requirements of a license you won't use. I took my NCLEX in NJ where I was living, and had my results sent to another SBON for licensure....

thanks so much!!!

Does anyone know the answer to my original posting?

Yes, you can work in NJ at very few hospitals before passing your NCLEX. Although NJ requires that you are a licensed RN prior to working as such, some hospitals get away with hiring GN into positions called nurse fellows. The few NJ hospitals that have the Graduate Nurse Fellowship program, only accept new grads in May. This works out good for the new GN fellows, because they usually end up with extra hospital training compared to the new grads hired after passing NCLEX. The best thing to do is to ask the individual hospitals you are applying if they have that opportunity before you graduate.
