RN Endorsement

Nurses Career Support

Updated:   Published

Please can anyone help me? I'm in a really bad predicament.  I graduated nursing in Florida during covid. I tried to endorse to Texas and was denied because Texas wants me to go back and get  400 contact hours. I traveled to Florida to the school to get the hours and didn't get them because the school was so unorganized. Is there a way to hire a personal preceptor to assist with clinical hours needed?

I'm sorry you're in this situation.

Every state Board of Nursing (BON)/Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) sets its own minimum number of clinical hours for nursing students. For example, California stipulates 800 hours, Texas is 500 hours, and Florida is a state that does not specify a specific number of hours.

If Texas requires 400 clinical hours, there may be ways to fulfill this requirement, but it's essential to do so in a legitimate and approved manner.

Here are some steps to consider.

  • Contact the Texas BON to clarify the specific requirements and see if they can guide you on fulfilling the clinical hours requirement. Chances are you are not the first candidate in this predicament. With any luck, maybe someone at the BON has experience with this and can guide you.
  • Explore Approved Programs Check if there are approved nursing programs or institutions in Texas that can provide you with the required clinical hours. I know it's a long shot, but a program may offer clinical experiences for nurses in your situation. The BON has a list of approved nursing programs.
  • Hire a Personal Preceptor You might be able to hire a preceptor to gain the necessary clinical hours. However, it's crucial that the preceptor is qualified and that the arrangement complies with Texas nursing regulations. Consult with the Texas BON to ensure that this option is acceptable and that the preceptor meets the criteria. To hire a preceptor, do a Google search for keywords "hire nurse preceptor in Texas."

Good luck to you!

Thank you so much!
