RN or Diagnostic sonographer

I am really stuck deciding what I want to major in. I have completed all gen-ed's and prereqs that are the same for both (except maybe pharmacology). Anyone have any advice? I know this is a nursing forum. I was hoping someone could sell me on nursing haha...j/k.. I feel I would enjoy either professions. I am leaning towards nursing because of the knowledge of medicine and the body and sonography because it is less "gross" and possibly less stressful. Anyone have any advice how to choose?

Go for nursing for the variety of experiences. After you've checked so many livers, kidneys, fetuses and DVTs, I would think it would be boring.

Good luck in whatever you do.

Think to yourself: how many times have I heard of a nurse getting burnt out versus how many times have I heard of a sonographer getting burnt out?

The daily work of a sonographer may be more routine than that of an RN. However, it also less stressful and the pay and hours are usually better, depending on where you want to work. It all depends on what is more important to you.

What about the demand aspect?

Are there as many positions open for sonography as there are in Nursing?

Of course not.

Are there as many positions open for CRNA's as in Nursing? Does that mean there is a weaker demand for CRNA's than for nurses?

The demand must be high because they make good money, in many cases more than nursing. In the last 20 years it's standard for every single pregnant person to get a sonogram, more than once, so the demand is there. It's also very important and specialized. The sonographer is the one that discovers fetal demise, sees the tumor there that requires further testing, finds the deep vein thrombosus, etc.

I still say go for nursing.
