Hi
Not sure where to post this exactly because there isnt a dermatology specific thread. I am a RN who recently started at a Dermatology and Surgical Center. The Physician has never hired an RN. He has a APRN and PA and MAs in his office. Any RN's out there who work derm that can give me any guidance on your exact role in a derm office? I currently am learning the ropes of his office, assisting in surgical proceudres, and helping with general derm visits. Thanks for any info!

I worked in a Derm office that sounds very similar to yours. While I loved the people I worked with, I quit after a year or so. I didn't feel like I was really doing much actual nursing. He only did surgery one day a week, so it was mainly office visits. Our procedures were all done with local, so not much monitoring was really necessary. He did Mohs surgery, which was interesting, but I wasn't involved with prepping the tissue & slides. Every once in a while we'd get a bleeder, but nothing that a bit of pressure didn't fix. Lots of suture removal & rebandaging, decent amount of teaching opportunities. Lots of rashes & acne...it just got to be the same old stuff every day. Wish I could be more optimistic for you, but it just wasn't for me.

Worked in Derm/surgical clinic that specialized in mohs a couple years ago for about 6 months. For that clinic it was mostly minor surgeries and the MA's, LPN's, and RN's all assisted in surgery. After working for a period of time, they (MA/LPN/RN) all got training in closing/suturing.
