I am an RN certified in School Nursing with a Masters in Health Education and have been working in the school for 16 years since leaving Med/Surg and Post-partum/Newborn Nursery in the hospital. In addition I work a part-time job as an RN in First Aid at a local entertainment complex where we deal with guest medical issues as well as employee occupational health issues.

Within the past 7 months, I took the CPC course online with AAPC and earned my CPC-A certification with the hope of giving up my part-time job and getting established in a part-time coding position or something similar which I can continue doing after retiring from the school district in the next 3-8 years.

There are very few coding positions open for those with the apprentice status and those few I have seen have been full-time day positions which would require me to leave the school earlier than I had planned, having an adverse effect on my retirement.

I welcome any advice on suggestions of future career moves to use the education and training that I have now to plan for part-time work for my retirement. As a single mom who raised two boys on her own, I am not in a position to just sit back and enjoy a wealthy retirement and will need to work part-time. Ideally, working from home as a coder would be great but I just don't know how to get there from here.

Hi, I'm responding and do realize the OP posted more than a year ago, but I wanted to help with a couple of suggestions. I am also a RN and am taking coding classes to take the cpc exam through the AAPC. By any chance do you have a local chapter that meets monthly for meetings? I've been attending my local chapter meetings and realized how valuable these meetings really are. We talk about open positions, and also network within the chapter and through the guest speakers. I've also been able to get business cards and keep in touch for open positions.
