RN Case Manager

Hi everyone! I am interested in becoming an RN Case Manager, but don't know where to start! Most job postings say that they want you to have at least a year or two of case management experience, how do I find a job that will get me that experience? Also, I have my Associates degree. Do I have to have my Bachelors in order to be a Case Manager?

I have been an RN for four years and have experience in subacute rehab and home care. Most of my home care experience was in Pediatrics. Any Case Managers out there have any advice for me? It would be greatly appreciated!

    Get your BSN and then ANCC Board Certification in Case Management. BSN is essential to learn the critical thinking, holistic approach and theory necessary to understanding the Case Management model. Plus, facilities and HMOs who employ CMs get better reimbursement rates when they employ BSNs as Case Managers so that is the big push right now. And accreditation entities (Joint Commission, etc) are going to start requiring a percentage of BSNs be Board Certified in a specialty. I just got hired as a CM by a company who is prepping for their survey so I know what I'm talking about.

    Also consider obtaining your PHN (Public Health Nurse) license (usually just means paying a fee to your BON if your BSN curriculum included Public Health instruction, which all good BSN programs should). Case management is a huge part of PHN work - so this license, and some experience in it, is valuable to any Case Management employer.

    Also, take a Telephone Triage course! CMs spend a lot of time on the phone and potential employers will be impressed to see you made an effort to polish up your phone skills.
