RN Becoming a Childbirth Educator...Where to Start

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Published

I am currently a nurse at a surgery center, but was a nurse and then traveling nurse in L&D for over 3 years. I am interested in taking classes to become a childbirth educator. Can anyone suggest a good organization to go through? Also, any comments/ information from nurses who are childbirth educators would also be appreciated. Thanks! :nurse:

I would suggest thinking about who you want to work for/with. If you're planningon working in a hospital setting, go directly to the hospital and find out what they prefer. If you're going to be offering classes within the community, you have many choices. Explore what your community already offers and network among CBE in your community. You may also want to get a feel for the different philosophies of each and find out which one meshes best with your gut.

I know several people who've gone through this organization and are wonderful CBEs. :) Good luck!

I received my childbirth education certification through PCE, www.childbirtheducation.org, and I loved it, loved it, loved it. It was a wonderful experience and I loved the teacher.
