retaking courses

here is my dilemma. I took a course about 3 years ago, it was when I was going for teaching, and its a teaching course(ITE 115). well I dropped out of it and received an F. so far a have A's and am wondering if that course is going to hurt me, not so much as the gpa, but just having it on there. I really don't want to retake it, but what do you guys think?? thanks

Good day, mbtsab:

Please check with your school advisor since the answer will be specific to how your school handles such situations. They may forgive the F, if from another school, it may not transfer over, or they may ask you to retake it.

Thank you.

I agree with checking with your advisor. Retaking a class has a very small effect on GPA. The new grade does not replace your old grade, it just averages in with it.

I think retaking a class is only good to prove that you can pass it. Nursing school would not be impressed that you can pass a teaching class.

If transferring to another school you would not receive recognition of any class below a C. Neither classes nor grades transfer to a new school :). Only recognition transfers.

You receive recognition for satisfying credit on their curriculum with no grade attached to it, providing it is a class they recognize.

Check transfer transcripts. You receive credit for their classes only, while referencing another school's class they chose to recognize.

The reason I think they do this is if you were to do poorly one semester then take a class during the summer at an 'easier' school, the new grade will have absolutely no effect on your home school's GPA.

with what I understood with my community college is you can retake a course and they take the second grade, the first grade stays on your transcript, but the new grade is whats calculated to your GPA. thank you all for the info

I think retaking courses and how GPA is calculated depends on the school. I do know that some schools calculate GPA on the second grade, but both remain on the official school transcript. Ask the registrar's office about the GPA calculation procedures related to classes that were retaken. Good luck!
