Hey guys
I will be graduating with a BSN soon and I wanted to hear about any of your experiences that you had with nursing residencies in San Antonio, TX. I have heard some general information about Versant (at Santa Rosa) and the Methodist residency. If you could share any information about the duration, pay, or just general experience in any of the programs, I would appreciate it. Thank you

Hello!
I'll be starting the Methodist residency on February 10th. The duration depends on the department you're hired in. I'm in the Critical Care residency, so my residency is 14 weeks long. The only other exact duration I remember was 8 weeks for med-surg, and peri-op is the longest. During the residency I get payed a flat rate, bi-weekly. Then following the completion of the residency, I'll get $22/hour + diff and benefits. That's as much as I know right now since I haven't started yet. Lol. Other than the first two weeks are orientation, then following that we'll have class one day a week and work with our preceptors 3 days a week. My advice is you decide on the Methodist Residency... Go to the Meet & Greet (get there EARLY), bring a lot of resumés, and talk yourself up. Most of the people who are hired, come from the Meet & Greet since the programs are extremely competitive (there can be 40-50+ people interviewing for 1-2 spots).
The Versant Residency is probably the most tried and true residency in SA, but the Methodist one is pretty good from what I've heard.
I also know University has a new residency program that start when you're hired, haven't heard much about it.
Southwest General also has a residency program.

How did you go about apply for the program at Methodist? do you just apply for a job and become automatically considered for the new grad program if you have less than 6 months experience? or is there a separate application specifically for the program? Thanks.

Have you been able to apply at Methodist? I keep getting error pages when I go to their job application page.
There are application periods, Winter, Summer and Fall. The next start date is July 14th and the applications will open up May 18th, close June 1st and the Meet & Greet is June 6th. If you go to the search feature for the join Methodist page to apply for jobs, the applications will have "RN RESIDENCY" in them.

Kay, is the base pay for the entire 8-20 week duration ( dependant on the program)? or after your two weeks of orientation will it go up? I am deciding on trying it out, but am confused as to why they would pay less than the 22/hr you mentioned.

Thank you!
Yes it is. Technically while in the residency you're under the education department and only PRN on your actual unit; so the money you're getting is a stipend more than a salary. (When it's divided down, it's $16.88/hour... for me at least.) Some of that is because you're working with your preceptor rather than on your own during the residency. From my point of view, they're investing money in me for the classes I'll be taking, and the additional certs I may need... So getting something for 14 weeks is better than getting nothing.
oh, I see. That seems right since they are investing so much. thank you for clearing that up :-)

Hello Kay_BSNRN,
I was invited to the San Antonio Summer 2016 Methodist Healthcare RN Residency Meet & Greet and I'd love to get information on how your experience was, what the day was like as well as advise and tips from you on what to ask managers, what else to take besides my resume, how to portray myself, ect.
I want to be as prepared as possible.
Thank you so much in advance Kay! I hope to hear from you soon! :)
