Residency Program or New Grad Job?

I’m graduating next year with my BSN and secured an externship for this Summer. I’m now focused on graduating and the NCLEX, but I’ve been thinking about whether it’s better to apply to a residency program or just search for a regular job as a new grad. My dream job is in L&D, which I know is hard to get so I know I’d probably start off in some sort of medsurg position. Just wondering what everyone else has done/ is planning to do and why

Graduating in 6 weeks and I've been applying to residency programs that will offer placement on OB floors, out of all the programs in my state, I only note 2 or 3 that say they have placement for OB. I also applied to regular L&D jobs but most say not enough experience etc. Hopefully will secure a residency position, if not I will just start working and work my way into L&D.

That’s my plan too, good luck!
