Research Critique

Hi Everyone, I'm currently enrolled in an RN-BSN program and taking my first research class ever. I am required to do a Research Critique on an assigned article. This project will count for a high percentage of my grade. Most of the students in the class were assigned quantitative articles, but I believe my article is grounded theory qualitative. The article is entitled: Application of a theoretical framework to foster a cardiac-diabetes self-management programme (Wu, 2014). The article discusses self-efficacy strategies for patients with these 2 co-morbidities. Patients were interviewed regarding basic skills of self-management of their dual diagnoses. The interviews were conducted face-face and by phone. For example in person the patients were encouraged to check glucose levels and discuss the meaning. Open ended-questions regarding experiences were asked via phone. The exact number/sample is not mentioned in the article. Basically I am seeking verification that I am on the right track in my thinking that this has to be a qualitative article. I work full-time and I'm in school full-time so time is valuable. I have already spent numerous hours studying this article. None of the nurses in my work place have a clue. Thank you for your help! I appreciate and welcome all advice.

Bless you and thank you!

Once you have compared the article to the research criteria, you can take your paper a few steps further and show that the article is about translating research into practice by understanding how to apply theory from previous research. The previous research should be listed in the literature review and that research may meet the elements of the research criteria (if you assess it).

There are 41 references for this article so I should have quite the Literature Review!

Are any of the references by the same author as the Application of a theoretical framework to foster cardiac-diabetes self management programme article? If so, concentrate on reading their articles, as the author may have implemented the framework based on their previous research.

Yes, six references are from Bandura. I am so frustrated with this project. Maybe I'm making more of it than it really has to be IDK. The assignment states each student will be assigned a single study research article to critique. The instructor provided us with the Step-by-step guide to quantitative research. My article clearly does not meet the criteria.....No abstract, no sample size, no numbers, no statistics, no compilation of the data. It also does not meet the criteria for qualitative research either as the Step-by-step guide to qualitative research states the purpose of this type of research is to develop theory not test it, the researcher does not use an existing or known theory...but this article does use a known theory.....SO CONFUSING! I have emailed my instructor.

Do not look at the Bandura references, look at the Wu references, as she is the author of the article assigned to you and she did the research that is applied in the article.

Oh, I get what you are saying. Wu has five references of the 41.

Does Wu have a reference that has the words self management, diabetic, cardiac in the title?

Narrow the articles even further, look for the one(s) that contain all of the key words self-management programme, diabetes, coronary in the title.

Only one of those.

Only one of those.

What is the title of that one? Does the abstract seem like it contains some of the elements of research?
