Requirements for Nursing

Published

Hello Everyone,

I had a question and I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me. I am about to graduate with a BA in Philosophy and Theology next month, and though I have future plans to pursue my career(s) in those fields, at the present time I have found myself spending many months in the hospital working with patiens both strangers and family members in various cases and as I will continue to be working with many more over the months to come, I am interested in getting my certifcation as a nurse. I have some medical/clinical experience with HOSA as well as Volunteering at the Children's Hospital, and being my Grandfather and godson's care giver. Since I already hold, or soon will, a Bachelors Degree, what would I have to do do maybe excelerate my getting into the Medical field? Any infor would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.

May God Bless you...

Go find your state's board of nursing to find out what schools are near you, then go find their websites and see what the prerequisites are. Most any school worth going to has them posted online, and they all vary. Considering that your undergraduate had little/nothing to do with biology in any way, you're looking at at least a year and half if not two years of full time classes to make prerequisites before entering a program, which itself will take two years unless it's an accelerated program. There are accelerated BSN programs out there that require a previous bachelor's, but you still need the prerequisites done first.

My program is a direct entry Masters program. It is designed for those who are switching careers and hold a degree in a field other than Nursing. There were accelerated BSN programs too designed for the same demographic.

The pre-reqs that were most common between any given program I was considering were A&P I and II, statistics, microbiology, sociology, and basic chemistry with a grade of B or better. Some other classes that were recommended/required were nutrition, and human growth and development. It just depended on the school.

Ditto the above poster...I'd check out area college and university websites and see what their specific requirments are. Maybe attend a few info sessions as well.

Good luck!
