I would assume some medical background, or psychiatric back ground; however, I speaking for a county to level. I have seen new graduates. The retention rate is so low that if you have some experience, they'll be interested.

I would gather it would help to have an acute care or psych background. And I could be wrong, but I doubt that prisons have much need for CNAs. It's not like a hospital or even a nursing home. Prisoners can complete their own ADLs and the prison nurse is there for chronic illness management and to deal with acute issues. There may be some prisoners who have minimal to no contact with the nurse, so it's not like he/she needs an aide to help get VS on everyone or make sure everyone is bathed. It's kind of like (in a weird way) me as a school nurse... I have some students I see every day, multiple times a day. Others I see only when something happens. Still others I've never met.

Typically LPN or RN. It's a lot of med pass and screening. You have to be a rapid responder in case anything acute happens but it is usually then transferred to ER. The required background depends on where you're going but it's generally medical. If you're on a pysch unit you'll need pysch, acute care unit will require more medical knowledge, especially with detoxing inmates. It's a lot like school nursing... only with more awareness and chronic illness.
