Hi everyone, just registered today with allnurses.com.
I am seeking advise from all...as much as I will need...please feel free to leave any comments, anything will help. thanks!
a little bit about my background...
I earned my first BS from SUNY- Stony Brook in Health Science, right after that, I went through a tortuous program called EMT-Paramedic, but luckily, got passed NYS EMT-P certification exam and is now a certified EMT-Paramedic. Up until today, I never worked as an EMT! I kinda wasting time for myself again. So I ended up now having EMT-B,EMT-P & another whole bunch of pre-hospital certifications...but has no job qualification because I never worked in 911 system! I guess I was tired of studying REMAC (regional testing for P's who wants to work in 5 boroughs of NYC)! So this is my present life.
Just 2 years before that, when I was in SBU starting from 2001 - 2008 (yea! it took me 7 yrs to finish my basic college education:oembarrasing~), I was not always a hard working student, and I did sort of flunk myself in between those 7 yrs, and for 3 semesters consistently in my senior yr in SBU, I was not going to my classes at all. My grades are F,F,F,F,N/F,N/F.....all the way for about 1.5 yrs. Until one day, the final warning hit me like a comet hitting earth, I was on academic probation, warning, warning and reinstatement and 2nd reinstatement. However, Luckily, I met one of the greatest student advisor there, and she led me to dawn of my dark age.
She ask me to try hard and stay in college, to graduate with at least a bachelor degree. I did so, and not only so, I made it to Dean's list couple times in my 5th year in college, and last semester was 4.0 GPA and that was the 6th year. I completely realized that I have wasted so much time, and I have F's on my transcript for over 3 semesters. Even though I do well now, it still won't makes any difference?
After bumping into so many trouble in find jobs and unsuccessful, I decided to choose Nursing and that's how I ended up in CSI, right now in first semester here as a transfer student. My 3 out of 4 pre-requisite classes are already completed, all my credits are transferred from SBU. Currently I am taking my A&P I this semester and my average right now is like 85 in the class... I don't think I'll be able to get an A , anyways...
so here is my concern:
After they transferred my credit, i realized that one particular pre-requisite for nursing is Psychology, and for that class, I earned a B , and it's a already a repeat. I got a F for not attending Psychology the first time, so I guess a repeated grade of B won't do me much help...
Because I wasted 3 semesters of time, and just registered and never went to any of the classes, on my transcript, all the grades were showing F, including my first Psychology class. Now, as I saw on the basic requirement part in order to get in nursing program in CSI, I should never repeat any of the pre-requisites even though right now my overall GPA in pre-requisites is like a 3.6.
I am seriously in consideration of giving up nursing as a choice because of that!!
Don't know what to do at this point even though I haven't even started the application...kinda loosing my faith before even applying...
Someone suggested I could try apply for private nursing program, but I don't have that kinda money:crying2:, HELP!

Perhaps you could find a community college program that only will consider pre- and co-req. GPA and not penalize anyone who's repeated classes?
that class I repeated is one of the pre-requisites.
Pre-requisite classes are psychology, ethics, english and A&P.
I am in a community college.
thanks
Right. Anyway. You say that you "should" not repeat any of the pre-requisite courses, but does the community college use the average grade received in all attempts of a particular course, or do they look only at the most recent attempt?
my first psychology class that I took was in 2005 and got an F, and it was repeated in 2007 and got a B. I just asked my school this morning, it seems they are taking my transfer credits from 2007 instead of 2005. I don't know if they check my overall GPA when I was in Stony Brook or they only evaluate me based on 4 pre-requisites. If they evaluate me based on my overall GPA from my 1st bachelor degree, I'm sure that I will not make it because it was 2.36. If they choose me based on pre-requisite class, then I might have a better shot at, my only worry is that I repeated psychology and second time I got B, not the first time. When I go to advisor, she didn't say that I shouldn't apply nor did she said that I should apply. Her comments was "we typically don't take students who have repeated pre-requisite, but if you put it in detail writing about why you did so poorly, maybe you will have luck."
I stood there and think, what does that supposed to mean, should I or shouldn't I apply? but stubbornly, I still registered for A&P class and doing well so far.
I apologize for confusing people with my question,
but I really have no clue if I'll get in or not...the bottom line is, I wish to have really good advise from someone who have similar experience.
If you're looking for someone who has had a similar experience, then I would try posting your question in the appropriate state forum, and make your inquiry about this particular community college (since requirements from college to college may and most likely will vary).
I have not been in your shoes, but based on what you've written, I would apply anyway (and include a kick-a** detailed explanation of why you received poor grades and how you've since reformed)...what do you have to lose?
On the other hand, it would look more favorable for you to have knocked out almost every class since your bachelor's with A's.
I doubt if anyone shares similar background like me. and No one else flunked themselves in school for 2 years and got back on track for another 2 years and finally managed to their 1st Bachelor. I guesss I'm just too different compare to anybody else. As matter of fact, my lowest GPA dropped to 1.7 and I brought it back to 2.36 in one year. It was a risky battle and I;m sure I was in luck, most people would just fail out of college if they were me. Yet, I ended up with a bachelor still useless. sigh~
Failing a year of college or even flunking out is more common than you think.
One of my good friends who is also deaf, flunked out of college her first year. She transferred schools, got her act together, obtained her bachelor's degree and then proceeded to graduate law school.
Not every college is willing to give a student a second chance, but it does happen, and it can happen for you as well.

I started community college when I was 18 and took four classes A+P 1, intro to psych, english comp 1, and algebra all that are requirements for my school's nursing program. I ended up quitting school two weeks into the semester. I never officially dropped any of the classes. All of the classes dropped me with a grade that said I was dropped except for 1 A+P1 which gave me an F. I found all of this out when I went back to school five years later. I was on academic probation and suspension and was really kicking myself for a mistake I made five years prior and never officially withdrew. I stuck with it and repeated all of the classes and had a 4.0 gpa by the time I applied to nursing school even with my F from A+P. When I looked for schools I didn't apply to one's that said they would not accept repeat classes. Most of the schools said it was okay as long as I didn't repeat the class more than once. I also included a story about it in my admission essays. I got accepted to all of the schools I applied to. So my advice to you is to learn from your mistake and not let it bring you down. Find the schools that are willing to overlook you repeating a class and prove to them( doing well now, good test scores, and good recommendations) that you are a good candidate for the program. If you want it bad enough there is a way to get there but it may not be the easiest route. Good luck!
