removal of GN status

I live in Kansas and am attending a BSN program. My class will graduate next May. Just recently a house bill was introduced which proposes the elimination of the GN status. If this passes we will have to take our boards right away without the 120 day as a GN. Is this common??? My school has a really good pass rate, but should we be worried??? Is the GN/GPN status necessary???? I've heard this quote many times "Can't wait til you graduate, then we'll teach you how to be a real nurse." I'm confused.

I live in NJ and they did away with the GN status a couple of years ago. Now we take our NCLEX within 6 weeks of graduation and we can't work(unless it's in a non-liscensed position) until we get our NCLEX results. However, we're hearing that some hospitals are doing "internships" for graduate nurses until they pass their NCLEX and then they bump up to RN's. So after all is said and done, we graduate May 25th and we'll be taking our NCLEX about July/August. Plus if we want to do the internship programs, we need to start applying like NOW.

If you are starting a new position, it is always better to get the exam done and out of the way first. It will be quite difficult to prepare for your new position as well as review for the NCLEX exam.

Many states have already done away with the GN status already, so really isn't something to worry about.
