Relocating to Gulf Shores / Foley area.

Hello all,

My family and I are wanting to relocate to the Gulf Shores/ Foley area from Ohio. I will be a new grad, and my wife is an experienced RN. Do any of you have advice for finding a job in the area? Or maybe places to avoid working? I hear a lot of good things about USA hospital and Baptist in Pensacola. I looking for trauma, ICU, and/ or the CCU (but being a new grad I know it maybe a long shot to go directly into those areas). Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Matt :)

try south baldwin Medical Center. It is smallish, but has a good reputation. May not have the high-acuity level compared to the ones you mentioned, but may be more open to a new grad. I work for one of their sister hospitals and our ceo used to be at south baldwin and has had very positive comments. Good luck.

Hi Matt, South Baldwin Regional Medical Center isn't hiring much lately. USA is a good place to work but is a good 45 minutes from Foley and 1hr 20 min from Gulf Shores. Thomas Hospital in Fairhope hires frequently, less acuity than USA and is 30 minutes from Foley, 45 minutes from Gulf Shores.

I work at Sacred Heart in Pensacola, great place to work with high acuity. Sacred Heart is an hour from Foley and 1 hr 15 minutes from Gulf Shores.

Places I would consider working at:

Providence Hospital in Mobile (same company that I work for)

Springhill Hospital in Mobile

USA Women and Childrens-worked there and LOVED it.

USA

For the above places I would recommend living in Spanish Fort or Daphne.

Thomas Hopsital in Fairhope for living in Foley.

Sacred Heart Hospital and live in Pensacola (this isn't the prettiest city but has a beautiful beach). Also Baptist in Pcola.

Best wishes to you!

Thanks for the replys. We are still trying to collect info about the area. Right now, I want the high acuity and I'm leaning towards the hospitals in Pensacola. USA never seems to have openings in their units. Thanks again.

Pensacola- Try Sacred Heart or Baptist in Pensacola. Never worked there but "hear" good things :-) Both are Trauma Centers. Sacred Heart is a nicer facility but both have good reputations. Both have air ambulances

Mobile- The STICU at USA has a high nursing turnover rate... With that being said, the ED at USA is a wonderful place to work. It is great experience with very good teamwork! It is a teaching hospital so you do have to be tolerant and flexible... Level 1 Trauma Center with a Regional Burn Center. Great discounts for USA college if your an employee :-)

Baldwin County- South Baldwin is VERY POLITICAL. You are reminded frequently that "they are doing you a favor by allowing you to work for them"... Personal experience! Not a trauma center. Low acuity.

Baldwin County- Thomas Hospital is a nice hospital but is affilitated with Infirmary. Not a trauma center. Low acuity.

Baldwin County- North Baldwin is also an Infirmary facility. Not a trauma center, rural area, low acuity.

I mentioned all three of the Balwin County hospitals and the trauma centers. The other hospitals aren't worth the drive (in my opinion).

Good Luck!

Thanks Disasternurse,

This is a little late but I used to work at USA Medical Center and I have to say, I love working in a learning/teaching facility. There are always students abound, and you are constantly learning new things everyday.

STICU has a really high turnover rate and the nurse manager isn't very friendly. She's also head of CCU and PCU last time I heard. But if you work there for one year, you can work anywhere. Promise.
