Rehab RN before FNP school?

Specialties NP

Published

I gruduated from a BSN progam in North Carolina in May 2008. I am currently working as a RN in a inpatient rehabilitation center at a hospital. I want to start FNP school fall of '09. My current concern is that my only prior RN experience before applying to a FNP program will be one year experience in an inpatient rehab setting. The graduate program I am applying to only requires one year RN experience and does not specify as to what that experience is (ie, critical care etc...). Opinions appreciated :)

If you feel this is where you want to be then I say just go with it. The year of Rehab experience gives you a wide range of adult diagnoses, but little pediatric experience. Can you take classes part time and gain additional experience?

Have you been accepted in a FNP program or will the limited experience hurt you in the application process...just curious. The way around that might be taking classes part time (getting the grueling research, stat, epidemiology stuff ) out of the way first while you plug away on the job front. Keep us posted.
