the 625 mg/kg figure you were given is suspect. i would not give a child 625 mg x 38.2 kg, or 23,835 mg (23.875 grams) of ancef in a million years! the normal adult dose is 500 to 1.5 grams q6h, so how could the pediatric dose be larger? i linked you to information on this drug. scroll down to the pediatric dosage information and you will see on the table that they do not recommend going over 100 mg/kg for up to a 45 pound (22.7 kg) child. your book has a typo. i tried to work the problem backwards from the answer, but my brain is not working this morning.

Could someone please help me with this question:
Order: Ancef 625mg/kg IV every 6 hours for pneumonia
Child weight: 38.2 kg
Drug Available: Dilute each 1-g vial with 10mL of sterile water for injection and further dilute 50mL of NS to infuse over 30 minutes.
a) How many milliliters will you draw from the vial after reconstitution?
b) Calculate the milliliters per hour to set the IV pump
The answer sheet has a) 6.5mL and 56.5mL/hr. I have set up a) to be
625mg/1g/kgX38.2kgX1g/1000mgX10mL = 238.75mL
