Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hi everyone . I would like some opinions about my circumstnces. I externed at a small rural hospital in telemetry the summer before graduation. I applied for a graduate nurse position at the same hospital in L and D. I spent the summer orienting to the floor. Started night shift 7p- 7A in sept. our call time is horrible. We have to come in at the spur of the moment when they finish the regular schedule to sighn up for 12 4 hour slots per 6 wk schedule. We are not told when it will happen, you just get an e-mail and if you don't come in you are out of luck what ever is left is what you get. This last time zi was out of state with my child for an appt. with a Dr. Th eonly thing left was a full 24 hour time slot this past Sat. My sister worked in L and D at a hospital within 30 minutes of my home and suggested I apply on line to her hospital to get more experience because she listened to me vent at Thanksgiving. We had two OB groups when I started this summer. We were busy and I was learning. Once I went to night shif one OB group dropped out. I now have been put on call at least once a week some times twice for low census. We do not have a nicu or pediatricians at this hospital. We do labor delivery recovery post partums and nursery. Right now I feel under appreciated and a glorified babysitter. I would like to go to the hospital that is 30 minutes away so I applied for a position on line. I recieved an e-mil this morning that states I haven't been working long enough in this area for the position but they will keep my resume and application on file for 90 days. I would like to start over at this hospital as a new grad because I am still only 6 months out of school. My sister will not be in the area again until Jan. 10th and she says she will take me down and introduce me to the manager. Until that time I would appreciate and ideas tht you can give me. I am a fast learner and I am eager to learn all the CORRECT ways to take care of a laboring pt. at the present time when I get in to work if the induction is not moving along the docs stop the pit and we babysit ll night with stadol and ambien. I am not learning anything this way and I am forgeting everything that I did learn.
