RAM cannula

Can somebody explain to me the "down and dirty" about RAM cannulas? Are they essentially used as BiPAP for babies? I know they are used on our kids when they don't look so well even on HFNC, and it seems like they are placed on a "rate" but it doesn't synchronize with their actual breathing pattern like our BiPAP does.

I don't know if this makes any sense but I'm hoping somebody can clue me in on the mechanics of how this method of ventilation is more effective! Thanks!

It's like a step up from HFNC/step down from intubation.

As the educator on my floor likes to explain it, it is like "breathe with me". It delivers a set rate, VT, and PEEP. HFNC doesn't offer those settings.

The RAM cannula is essentially *just* a nasal cannula. What makes it special is it's ability to be used in conjunction with other devices that can deliver CPAP or BIPAP. The RAM itself can be used as a standard nasal cannula at low/standard flows or connected to another device to deliver high flows or positive pressure. Ultimately, the RAM itself is not providing the therapy, it is what the RAM is connected to that is determining the therapy delivered.

Well, all this now makes perfect sense. Thanks, guys! (Allnurses - the place I go to ask the questions I'm too embarrassed to ask at work, and that google doesn't answer!) ;)
