Raises for no one, except-(sorry, long post)

Published

I am in desperate need of some guidance. When I started my present job one year ago, I was promised a "substantial" raise in 6 months. Around the 8 month point I mentioned this to my office manager. She reprimanded me for asking about a raise. Basically she said that our office was a new one and we should all just do what was necessary to make the practice a success, namely not expect a raise until the practice was making a steady profit. I was OK with waiting for a raise, that's why I didn't bring it up sooner. I am the only nurse in an orthopaedic office and the doc I work for tells me quite often that I am a very important part of the office and that without me the office would not function. The office manager constantly oversteps her bounds by giving medical advise on the phone to patients. She has also taken about 3 vacations this year and only works on average of three days a week. We are both full time and salaried. We both were started at the same rate of pay. Well, I found out about 2 weeks ago that she is now being paid a LOT more than I am. I found out about this when the accountant sent over expense statement over the fax on a day she wasn't here (as usual). I am very upset because she told me no one was getting a raise until we made a profit. Also, because we are both salaried she is making about $600 more a month than me and working way less hours:angryfire .The amount she is making would have given everyone in the office a nice raise. I am told by my doctor that I am doing a tremendous job and I know he is happy with my performance. This has caused me to feel very betrayed and angry. Should I say something to my doc, or just learn to live with it? I am afraid to rock the boat, but I know this will just become a bigger issue for me until I am miserable here:uhoh21: . Any advise would be appreciated.

Did you get that promise, signed, sealed and delivered, IN WRITING???

if not , you appear not to have a leg to stand on. It will come down to whether you wish to continue taking this, or move on.Their reprimanding you for asking to deliver on a promise is very telling----I doubt you will get any where w/this place and you will continue to be miserable.

If you did, (get a written agreement/contract) time to pull it out and show them what they PROMISED you and deliver or you will be taking some action on it.

PS your office manager giving medical advice over the phone is illegal. It can land your dr and the whole office in a lot of hot water....is the dr aware of this??? If so, another reason to say BYE BYE!

It might also be the office manager putting a stop to this. Maybe she gets a bonus for keeping costs down. If you are thinking of leaving, you might talk to the Dr first. But remember, you still have to work with the office manager, who probably won't be happy you went over her head.

Check out the other jobs available to you, and see if there are other places you could work. If positive, go sit with the Dr. on a day that this "manager" is not at work, and tell him that you are planning on leaving. When he asks why, tell him the truth. Then be ready to leave.

Next place you go to work, get all their promises in writing. Best of luck, and let us know how it goes.
