Does anyone know how or where I can find online classes to get ultrasound or radiology certificate? I am an RN with 7 yrs experience in dialysis but am interested in going into a different speciality

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

Radiology tech is a AS or BS that is usually an in person program due to clinical rotations. U/S requires in person clinical site rotations

Thank You. I was hoping something would be offered online for theory, then I could do my clinicals in person. Thanks for the post í ½í±

Specializes in Critical Care Transport.

Interventional radiology is a specialty in nursing and you wouldn't need any additional formal education to obtain a position. I think you do need critical care experience, but I am not certain about that. If you look around I am sure you could find more information about the specialty.

Interventional radiology/radiology nurses do not perform the X-ray studies or ultrasounds the certified techs do the exams. Nurses handle the IV starts, patient assessment & prep, administer meds, may assist in procedures such as catheterizations, angioplasty. The nurse monitors the patient (ECG, respiratory status, hydration, etc). The nurse may do the pre-procedure clearance review and refer to MD for medical clearance. Post procedure monitoring and discharge education and may schedule follow up. In my area there are nurses in the cath lab and nurses in radiology. The radiology nurses also work with the hospitalists for sedation such as pediatric MRIs and handle the IV starts, certain medications & patient monitoring pre/during/post. Depending on the population served, most of the nurses have MICU, CCS, CVICU, or PICU experience or at least step down/telemetry experience. Most have ACLS & PALS too.
