Hi School Nurses,
Just wondering what your "pet peeves" of School Nursing are ?
It's good to know how everyones else out there feels like !
Thanks for your input,

I have been a school nurse for only a year and a half, but the one and only pet peeve I have is the misuse of the nurse's office, particularily at the middle school level. They come down to get out of class - no particular complaints or obvious injuries. They ask for Tylenol and I'll bet 90% don't need it. But we have a form the parents fill out at the beginning of the year giving us permission to use Tylenol for H/A's. I find it hard to have my time taken away by 'frequent flyers' from the students that need it. Of course, if the teachers did not write out the passes so freely for the kids to go to the nurse's office, there would not be a problem!!

WOW is my first thought. This is because my school's practice is the exclusion of prn drugs such as Tylenol. The only prns I give are for diagnosed ongoing medical conditions such as asthma, known allergies, diabetes, migraines, etc. If the child needs Tylenol, cold medicine, antibiotics, etc, the parent or a designee has to bring and give.
In elementary school, I get the children who do not come in uniform. Contacting the parent is routinuely dumped on me. This is a discipline problem, not a health problem, so I guess that would be my PP.
Some peers of mine in middle school tell me ice cures everything (i.e.; headaches, cramps from menses) for middle school students. lol.
