"I quit" but how

Nurses General Nursing

I could use some advice please.... Basically I am done with hospital nursing - I will be turning in my 2 week notice this week. What explanation do I give my NM as to why I am quitting but still retain a decent reference? I don't want to go in and say, "I quit because I can't stand working in the hospital anymore" So what do I say? Your help would be much appreciated.....

You don't have to go into all the gory details, and burn your bridges. Just tell them that you are resigning "for personal and professional reasons", and "that it is time for you to pursue other interests in nursing". :)

You first should ask yourself what it is you don't like anymore about hospital nursing. If it the hours say "the hours it requires for me to do this job is interferring with.....", if the pt/nurse ratio, say that. "I cannot do my job to the best of my ability and provide quality pt care with safety, I will not work under these conditions...."

Sometimes a good honest face off helps solve the problems, sometimes it's time to move on.

Do what you love, and love what you do. When it becomes anything else but that...it's time to re-evaluate.

Good luck!

Thanks you 2. Got some good ideas from what you gave me.

I agree. You are not required to give specific reasons why you will be leaving. Give your ample notice in writing and that should be enough. Your reasons ARE personal and professional. If your NM begins to ask questions, I would be honest and explain you are ready for a change.

I made the decision to leave the hospital setting six months ago. I then struggled with what my answer would be (at interviews) as to why I did not want hospital work, since my whole resume was in the hospital setting. I finally just told the truth. I bluntly said that I wanted to leave the hospital setting at this time. I have never seen so many employers shake their heads in agreement that they would never go back to the hospital. I also received many job offers, so it did not hurt me at all.

I never knew how many other opportunitites were out there until I made that decision. Good luck!

Thanks for that - gave me the courage to do what I know I need to.
