"Hi Mrs. X, I'm Y and I'm your RN until 7."

Seems to be something about introducing myself as RN instead of nurse that keeps the "male nurse" conversation from starting. I don't understand it but it works for me and another guy on the unit. Interested in knowing if it works for others elsewhere.

Everyone knows what a RN is so it actually gives the pt more information than saying "nurse" (which could be LPN). Questions about what kind of nurse I am (RN/LPN) used to be fewer than the "male nurse" comments, but this eliminates those, too.

I always introduce myself as Hi Im Bubba your nurse.

They refer to me as Bubba, not as male nurse.

I think introducing myself as I am going to be your Nurse usually works for me. In most cases I am doing the introduction to family members since I work in the ICU.

I have heard many "male nurse" comments. Some of them are positive (e.g., "I prefer to be cared for by a male nurse"). But, it is clear to me that a lot of people find it noteworthy that a man is a nurse. I don't engage in conversation about it with them.

i work in surgery, i introduce myself as "your nurse" if anyone adds male to the phrase, it is usually the family, the patient about to udergo surgery has enough to think about.......

Hi anonymurse! Just wanted you to know I got the XandY part in your question! Very clever, genetically speaking!

I always state that I'm the pt's nurse. Now if I used the term RN..someone might misconstrue it to mean Registered NUT or Refined Numbskull, or even Reigning Nerd!

Don't let people call you that. It sounds too much like "Dubya," and I couldn't bear to associate you with, well, him. ;)

But don't forget, Bubba was Clinton's nickname!

No one would confuse me with GWB. He is too damn short.

He has more personality than GWB.

I introduce myself as Good morning Mr.X. I'm Claudio your nurse and physical therapist ...

I never heard any type of joke on the part of the members of the team or patients.

When she is a patient woman and it has shame I speak that I am a professional and therefore I do not make sex distinction, race, color, etc.

I introduce myself as, "Hi, I'm Matt, I'll be your nurse tonight."

Since the nursing assistant on my rotation is named Matt as well, I invite them to call me anything they want, as long as it's not Slim, Big'un, or Son.

Upon leaving, if the mood in the room suits it, I say, "If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask... we're open all night."
