I introduce myself as Good morning Mr.X. I'm Claudio your nurse and physical therapist ...
I never heard any type of joke on the part of the members of the team or patients.
When she is a patient woman and it has shame I speak that I am a professional and therefore I do not make sex distinction, race, color, etc.
I introduce myself as, "Hi, I'm Matt, I'll be your nurse tonight."
Since the nursing assistant on my rotation is named Matt as well, I invite them to call me anything they want, as long as it's not Slim, Big'un, or Son.
Upon leaving, if the mood in the room suits it, I say, "If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask... we're open all night."

Seems to be something about introducing myself as RN instead of nurse that keeps the "male nurse" conversation from starting. I don't understand it but it works for me and another guy on the unit. Interested in knowing if it works for others elsewhere.
Everyone knows what a RN is so it actually gives the pt more information than saying "nurse" (which could be LPN). Questions about what kind of nurse I am (RN/LPN) used to be fewer than the "male nurse" comments, but this eliminates those, too.
