"Employment-based visas available again".

My wife and I went to the popular and biggest Chinese buffet restaurant here in Daly City today and I picked up several of the free English-language Filipino newspapers and all of these newspapers heralded this latest immigration news.

One of them mentioned that the "Third Preference (Petitions by Employers) for professionals and skilled workers of Employment-Based Petitions priority date, which was unavailable the last few months is now Jan. 1, 2005."

"This means that visas (or green cards) would now be available for persons whose priority date is earlier than the cut-off date listed below. If your priority date is current, but retrogressed before your immigration visa was issued (or before you adjusted your status in the US), you would have to wait until it becomes current again." This quote is from one of the most prominent immigration lawyers here in the SF Bay Area.

They are not really open if you look at it. They still are not accepting the I-485 petition as well.

Anyone that has a PD date of more than 3 1/2 years and is not in the US already had some serious issues with their petitions in the first place.

Nothing has changed for anyone else in anything else getting approved at this time. Nothing is moving forward, actually went back further from what it was in June.

Anyone with a PD date that lone ago, even if in the US and using AOS has sigificant issues with something in their file or with their employer.

(p.s. Check out the Buffet in Foster City called Haikkado, it is much better than the two in Daly City.):nurse:

The prospect of E3 category PD dates moving forward more this fiscal year seems to be bright. Please look at the table below:

VB Date PD

October 2004 Current

October 2005 March 1, 2001

October 2006 May 1, 2002 Moved by 1 yr and 2 months

October 2007 August 1 2002 Moved by only 3 months

October 2008 January 1, 2005 Moved by 2 yrs and 5 months

So to all those who are already doc qualified, keep your hopes high.

They actually went back from where they were in June. Sure, if you have a PhD, then it is current for you.

It was 2006 in June for those from the Philippines.

With more and more applicants that are applying on a weekly basis, do not expect things to move readily; the same number of visas are available per year and that is not going to change.

And with the economy the way that it is in the US now, expect quite a few contracts to actually get cancelled by the facility before it is even time for the interview. With hospitals having lay-offs, they are going to have issues trying to justify all of the money that is needed to bring over a foreign nurse in many cases.

Actually, I was quite confused by these immigration lawyers writing articles in these various English-language Filipino newspapers. I am wondering why all of a sudden they wrote the same story, and I have learned from this nursing forum that retrogression remains in effect.

(Thanks Suzanne for the restaurant tip. Those two Chinese buffet restaurants in Daly City were quite popular when they first opened for business but I noticed that the number of patrons have diminished, judging from the lenght of time one has to wait for an open table. Well, they offer plenty of food and the prices are quite reasonable but the quality is lacking especially for more sophisticated diners...like nurses! They have many good restaurants in San Mateo, around the Third Avenue/ El Camino area, but I'll take your word and we'll try Haikkado in nearby Foster City.)

Thanks again!

The food is significantly better at the one that I mentioned. Was not impressed by the food at the two that you mentioned. :nurse:

The funny thing about those articles in those papers is that it is being made to look like the flood gates have opened, but that cannot be furhter from the truth as well as the fact that the US economy has tanked since they were written.

Expect to see hospitals begin to cancel contracts as they are having lay-offs and American nurses are not able to find jobs all over either.

Are you talking about those English-language Filipino newspapers that you can pick-up from places like Lucky Chances? There's a lot of them there. Pity that they do not really verify some of the information that they put in there because a lot of people read those newspapers, which cause wrong information to be easily passed around. :(

It's HOKKAIDO, actually, not HAIKKADO. Sorry, just nitpicking. :D

I'm actually partial to Beijing Buffet in South SF. I love their coconut shrimps and the chocolate fountain for dessert. I haven't been to the ones in Daly City. Where is it? Sorry, again, for going off topic. Shutting up now. :p

Typing fast in middle of the night for me, we still know where I am speaking of and that is what matters. I still like this one over all of the others.

And yes, many of those papers have nothing in them but what was told to them and it was not checked out. CA actually is now listed at the top of the list with some of the highest unemployment right now in the country; and a facility has to prove that they were unable to hire an American now for the job, even if they had plenty of openings when the petitioning process was started.

Yes, I'm referring to those several English language Filipino newspapers that you can pick up for free at many Philippine or Asian groceries here in the San Francisco Bay Area (and in many major U.S. cities for that matter).

When that story about the availability of U.S. work visas surfaced, it appeared in several of these newspapers and were actually written by the immigration lawyers that have columns in the said newspapers. I don't understand why did that all at the same time.

Our medical center hasn't hired Filipino nurses fresh from the Philippines for at least a couple of years now. There remains no work visas available at this time as I understand it.

Incidentally, I went to our hospital today to take some of my personal belongings home. I will be officially retired in about two weeks time. One of the last Filipino RNs to be hired by our hospital from the Philippines gave a friendly hug today. I wanted no retirement party because I plan to go back as a per diem nurse in 2009.

Incidentally I will be flying to the Philippines later this month for a quick vacation there and I hope to find some free time to visit at least one large hospital in Metro Manila just to check the hospital out and perhaps talk with a couple of Filipino nurses.

Any suggestion out there which Metro Manila hospital should I visit?
