"Circulating is so easy"

Specialties Operating Room

I'm sick to death of hearing how easy it is to circulate. The surgery center where I work is having a difficult time recruiting circulators and we are miserably understaffed right now. One of the tech's made the comment, "I don't know why they can't find anyone - I mean, it's the easiest nursing job there is - you get to sit around all the time" :angryfire I guess when you're a good circulator, you make it look easy. Has anyone else heard comments like this? What do you say? I end up feeling so angry that I just bite my tongue for fear I'll say something I'll regret (I have a bit of a temper, so it's best for me to keep quiet).

I have worked in OR's that have an all RN staff and OR's that have even tried to let techs' circulate.

I know which hospital I would rather be a patient at too.

Being versatile is always a plus tech or RN or LPN.

If I always had to circulate I would probably not work in the OR.

Thank goodness Techs aren't allowed to circ in California! I would never, never, ever work in any state that would allow such an unsafe practice.

I worked both circulating and scrub also, may be most circulating than scrub. OR life is a special life and you will not forget ever. My advice, try to stay catch to one, learn as much as you can until your will have basic routine making you able to function, after that do the same with the other option. Not mixed up both of them will be a big mess in your head unconstructive for nobody, neither for you, neither for your OR. What to learn, learn good in a good way! After that work involved your self in so many surgery that you can! Be there!

I start like circulating I worked a lot like. One day one of my surgeron asked me to wear the gloves ....was just like that... I already knew all the steps....much easy than in another way first scrub and after circulating.

OR will be an awesome nursing world if you know to deal with (still miss my team...:o!

Teamwork as it should be!!!!!!!!!!

RN's need to be proactive in regard to the tech circulator role because there are some managers that think it might be ok. especially on the budget. Techs do not have the training or the knowledge to safely circulate not even for a break. I really miss the all RN staffing in the OR. It is not easy being an or nurse scrubbing or circulating.:monkeydance:
