what is "acute surgical" unit?

Published

I am interviewing for a new grad position and it's for acute surgical, I have not heard of a unit titled this way, I was afraid to ask over the phone when they called, I had applied for another unit but they ask if I would interview for this instead.

Acute surgical is usually a term for units that admit from the OR and where the patients are fresh post-ops with many acute needs. There is a subclass of surgical patients who have passed the acute phase but are still too sick or dependent to be sent home; they would be called subacute or chronic or general surgical.
