Quit new LTC job for dream job offer?

OK SO

I am a recent grad of a few months who recently relocated. I accepted a job offer on the rehab unit of a Rehab/LTC facility and have completed one week of orientation and I am scheduled for two more weeks. I work 8 hours a day M-Th and every other weekend. I don't love it so far as it is not really in my interests, but I don't hate it. A job is a job as a new grad.

However, just yesterday, I received a call about a job offer for a prison. I love correctional nursing and trauma nursing! It is definitely a dream job! The orientation starts in 2 weeks.

What do I do?

I don't want to screw over my current facility, and I would still be willing to work for them part time, granted they would be able to work around the orientation week for the prison.

But what do I tell them? When? Do I say it now, and have them fire me during orientation? I don't want to burn bridges and have them think I'm ditching out 1 week in after they have already taken time with me.

UGHHHH

If you take the corrections job you will be burning the bridge. There's really no other way around it unfortunately. However if corrections is where you truly want to be then it is something to consider. Just really think it through and decide if burning the bridge is worth it.

Personally I would do it if corrections is where I truly wanted to be and liked the schedule and pay.

Where I live even the "good" LTCs have a hard enough time finding decent nurses that something like that definitely wouldn't constitute a burned bridge. Your mileage may vary.

If you took the corrections job and hated it, how much chance would you have of this facility (or system, if it has a larger affiliation) being your only fallback for other employment? Where I live, if the LTC on this street doesn't want you, the LTC in the next town over will take you. Same with the hospitals, if you don't mind med surg. So if I were in that situation, I probably wouldnt hesitate and take the dream job.

If you're a new nurse, how do you know you love correctional nursing? It might not be what you expect...

that's what I was thinking as well.

Ive done multiple internships at DOC facilities as I was curious if I would enjoy the job I've i became a nurse, and I loved it. :)
