Here's my response to your survey. I hope I'm not too late!
1.Why did you choose this career ? Why I went into nursing: I wanted to be a teacher. However, when I was graduating from high school, there was a huge teacher unemployment rate. My friends were going into nursing, so I did too. (lousy reason). Why I went into diabetes education? While doing staff nursing, I found I most enjoyed teaching people how to measure insulin, give insulin, etc. I fell into a diabetes educator job when my friend retired.
2.What are your responsibilities ? Diabetes education, nursing education regarding diabetes, community education regarding diabetes, diabetes support group, program management, marketing, and development.
3.What do you like most about your career ? It is very autonomous.
4.What do you dislike most about your career ? MDs who will not consider suggestions given by a nurse. I call it "MDitis."
5.What changes have you seen in your field of work related to the health care crisis and nurse shortage ? I have not seen problems in my specialty regarding the nursing shortage. However, I have noticed the difference in the ability of the staff nurse in caring for the patient and having time to do patient education.
Good luck with your project! Audrey
