Questions: Weekends off, holidays, and 12 hour shifts...

Just curious how your work doe weekends off? Worked 3 different weekend schedules over psst few years. I lI've rotating weekends and doing it again. One of my employers allowed you to schedule 3 months in advance time off on your weekend. With the job currently in can't schedule time off on your weekend unless you can find coverage for your weekend, which is tough.

Holidays is sporadic real no set time off. There is an anonymous suggestion box at work, think is the shredder ha. My old job use to have 2 blocks. Block A got certain holidays in 1 year and Block B get the other holidays off they rotate the holidays every year. So Block A would be off: New Year's, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and New Years Eve. Block B would be off: Memorial Day, Labor Day, Friday after Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Where you have to write down winter holidays off in a book. Then goes by senority and time off the previous year is considered. The summer holidays though it varies on your weekends off and holiday falls after your weekend off your on.

Our unit is piloting 12 hour shifts with nurses, but hit a hiccup. We loss 4 to 5 nurse's, 2 out for medical reasons, 1 left for school, 1 moved, and 1 left was per diem. So we our refilling the ranks again with 1 new nurse, 1 new per diem, 1 nurse from another unit coming aboard, and still searching for another nurse. It was difficult for people to transition to 12s due to family obligations, loss of money, and 2nd jobs.

So I am not sure if it will happen for us. Usually we rotate 3 shifts (Mostly 2 due to 2 techs who work strictly nights. These techs probably wouldn't do 12s.) Anyways we lost one tech. Losing another 3 by the end of the year and one tech is dropping hours. We have 2 types of techs on our unit. Tech dropping hours won't be bad because another tech is looking to pick up hour's. However, we will only have 4 techs, including me, at the other level.

3 of the techs wants 12s, but even going 12s still have many holds. Be nice if we did 16s, but we still would need another tech to come on board per diem or part time to fill holds.

I be game to work 16 hours: Sunday 16, Monday 8, Friday 16 or Sunday 16 and Friday 16 picking up hour's when I can since I am in school.

Do you guys like 12s or work on a unit with 16 hour shifts?
