Questions I should ask during the interview ...

Hi Everyone,

I am making my list of questions I should ask during an interview for a full time position at my local CC. I am a BSN who will be starting back for MSN in January (which of course is required for the instructor position).

They just recently changed the job ad and opened the position up to those who are working on MSN (need to finish in 3 years). So obviously they were having a hard time finding a MSN. We have a large local hospital who hires a lot of MSN nurses and of course pays better then the State. That said, I have crunched the numbers with my current pay and it would be equal.

For those who are faculty/instructors:

So what questions should I ask during the interview? What are the things you wish you'd asked but didn't during your interview? What are some of the unspoken things that I should ask about?

Hi jl,

Be certain to review the school's mission, purpose and philosophy. I am including some questions we ask of prospective faculty- you might think about including some of the responses in your initial 'presentation' during the interview process. Good luck! Tasysop

1. What about this position interests you?

Schoolof Nursing evaluates faculty in three areas - service, scholarship, and teaching. Describe examples of how you have fulfilled those activities in the past. 9. Collaboration within a College community is essential to a positive learning environment. Describe how you would handle a conflict situation with another member (faculty/staff/administration/student) of the College community. 1O. What is your overall philosophy about ensuring quality in a caring environment?

These are the questions I wished I would have in my interview with the dept chairs of nursing.

1. What is the faculty orientation like?

2. What will be my faculty load like for the 1st semester?

3. Will I have opportunities to shadow other faculty in their lectures? (this should be done if you have NO teaching experience.

4. Will I have to develop the curriculum and if so, who will assist me?

5. Will I have a mentor?

6. Will I be teaching the same course(s) each semester?

Be prepared to spend your 1st year of teaching doing ALOT of work at home! I had to develop the curriculum and exams and I literally do grading every night at home still and I just finished my 1st year.

Best of luck!
