questions from the class in grad school :)

I know I am trying to quit this thing but I am an addict. I have no life.

so lately everyone is asking a lot of questions in class. is this appropriate. some say " go look it up and if you cant find an answer then go ask" and others say " Iam paying good money here I should be allowed to ask questions whenever I please".

If you're asking questions to be clever or if you don't think the lecturer knows the answer, don't waste everybodys time. If you want to know something that the lecturer probably knows, ask away. That's how I censored my questions. Don't ask "is this going to be on the test".

i know there's no such thing as a stupid question, but, yeah, there are some stupid questions, if there are discrepences between what the notes say and what the teacher is saying then, yes ask, but if you don't understand something, go home and figure it out, if you still don't understand it meet with the teacher on your time, everyone pays money to go to school, there is a lot of info to cover in a limited amnt. of time, if everyone asked a question, we would never finish

AlanSmith-Look at "TexasTech" during each and every break we have. I am sure those all are not questions that need to be asked. Annoying to the students and probably the instructors. Yes there are stupid questions.

its killing me. one day very recently some asked. "how does extracellular potassium conc. affect permeabliltiy"... what... what... are you serious. perhaps this person was suffering from what I can only imagine is anxiety derlirium. and theres another guy that just wants to sound smart. for the love of humanity. go ask dr. guyton at home. he he he he. yeah. poor texas tech. and poor inquiree

With all the comments current grad students have made about apparently unresearched questions made in class, what are the responses commonly made by the lecturers? Do they search the student's question to see if they have looked into it own their own before asking? Any thoughts? Also, with schools that have relatively small classes (25-30 students admitted yearly) how do peers respond to this in and out of the class when it becomes a distraction with the same student asking the same type of unresearched questions time and time again with every minute valuable in a 30 mo. program?

Would love to hear comments from current students on their experiences and how they or their lecturers deal with this. Questioners reactions/responses?

the thing is we all have questions. I don't ask becuase I feel like the teacher has already been abused by frequent askers. And I think many feel the same way and this way. how is it we all pay the same amount but you do all the asking of questions. here again the thinking types are left to be the resposible sober ones while the "selfish" ones use and abuse. plus the faster the lecture finishes the material the sooner we all get to go start studing.

I've seen lectureres try to repel questions by i.e. embarassment, or flat out saying " no questions please" but theres always the guy that thinks he's got something no else in the world has ever thought of.

when ever someones asks a question, the teacher answers it, as they should, but if the same person keeps asking questions in class they get labeled. everytime they raise their hands or open their mouths everyone in the class groans in a not so subtle way, it doesn't take long to get the hint. don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with asking an intelligent question, often times someone will ask a question that i was wondering about myself, but it tends to be the same person/persons who ask questions that prove to everyone that they have no idea what they are talking about and haven't studied at all.

i don't mind when some ask questions - usually they are good and the instructors explanation only betters my understanding...

what i don't like is those people that roll their eyes and make nasty comments when others ask questions and then have the nerve to ask the stupidest things....but i guess you always have a few....:)

I remeber very well as an undergrad I asked a lot of questions. the most questions came form me in most cases. I dont' ask any now. I guess becuase I feel like we've elevated to diffrent plane.

somtimes if I don't understand somthing I really would like th answer now so that the concept can flow nicely into my skull along witht he material that will continure to come. because if you dont understand a concept early on in lecture your screwed for the rest of the time.

am I talking out of both sides of my mouth? my point is both sides can be argued very persuasively and I suppose you'll likely never have a class that pleases everyone.
