Questions about Cape Fear Valley Health System

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

I am a nursing student with one more year of school left. I am a student at UNC-Chapel Hill and am considering working at either UNC Hospitals or Cape Fear Valley Health System. Being a student at UNC, I am quite familiar with what this hospital has to offer for new grads.

Can anyone provide information on Cape Fear Valley Health System. It is very important to me to work for a hospital with a residency program and I understand that Cape Fear Valley has residencies for 3 areas. What is this hospital like for nurses? How is the clinical ladder, opportunity for professional development, etc.

I had heard that they had a bad reputation with their nurses in the past, but that this has changed now that the hospital is trying to get magnet status. I also saw a commercial where they have instituted nurse-patient ratios.

Can anyone provide any information about this facility. I am not sure what area I want to work in, but it is very important that I work at a facility that supports new nurses.

Specializes in CV Surgery Step-down.

Cape Fear Valley came twice to our school (Johnston CC in Smithfield) for recruiting lunches. I think we were all very impressed with their new grad/intern program, but for most of us it was too far away to commute. I think one fellow student is working there.

Last fall, they had a booth at the NCANS conference in Raleigh. The recruiter was great and answered all of our questions. That's a great place (NCANS conventions) to start checking out different programs. Good luck!

CNS48 Can you please tell me what UNC Chapel Hill has to offer new grads.I am very curious because I am considering working their after I graduate. Thanks alot.:). And I am from fayetteville so if I find out more about Cape Fear I will let you know.

Hello MommytoZion,

UNC Hospitals offers a residency program for all new grads in a variety of specialty areas. They also offer an Educational Loan in return for a work commitment. Feel free to visit their nursing website at:http://www.unchealthcare.org/site/Nursing. Under nurse employment you can learn about their residency programs as well as the financial assistance they offer.

Wow those residency programs look awesome. Do you know the hiring process or when they do hire? I graduate next May and would love to get in on one of those.

I'm a new grad at CFVHS right now, they have just this year started the residency program for new grads, I am not clear on the details because I'm going into critical care. They have a critical care school that you have to fill out a special application and do a special interview for, NICU school, L&D school (although no L&D this year), Long-Term Acute Care School, ED school (not this year) and OR school which all require a service commitment after completion. If you don't go into one of these schools then you are automatically part of the new grad residency which is being run by Vansant (sp?). The pay is pretty good, about the same as the Raleigh area, maybe a bit more, without the cost of living (if you move here). I like it so far, it does seem like the hospital is committed to the new ratios and I think it is making a difference in morale around the hospital.
