Hi, I'm a first semester nsg student and I'm so much frustrated about my exam results. I have 3.82 GPA now, but I'm so much wondering that my GPA will go down because I got C . Can anyone tell me how to study and practice NCLEX-RN style Qs for school exams. I just read the book and practice it's companion website practice Qs. How do I practice more Qs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would highly recommend the two following NCLEX-style question companion books:
1) Fundamentals Success (A Course Review Applying Critical Thinking to Test Taking)
2) Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN Exam (4th ed.)
I use both of these to review NCLEX style questions prior to my exams. So far, this strategy has made my exam-taking successful.
Good luck to you! :)
Thank you for your suggestions. I will buy those books quickly. Hope then it will be fine. Thanks again.:bowingpur
Hi watsonsd, one thing I want to ask you, How do you study? I mean, do you just practice and practice questions from those books more often OR read your textbook too. I study the powerpoint slides and book and now onwards i'd study the books you have suggested. I just wanted to change my study habit to be successful in exams.

Hi Digoxin--
Here's what I do:
1) Calculate the number of days I have until the exam.
2) Total the number of pages from the assigned book reading then divide by the number of days--finishing 2-3 days prior to the exam so that I have that time review and ask questions.
3) I highlight as I read--when I complete a chapter I take notes on the information that I highlighted.
4) During the 2-3 days prior to the test, I review my notes, and do the NCLEX book chapters that apply to the unit.
5) Finally, I do the CD or online questions supplied by the publisher of my textbooks.
If there's anything that I'm unsure of I address it with my teacher during the 2-3 days prior to the test. (There's nothing worse than having questions the night before the exam!)
I hope this helps you! :)
Thank you so much for both watsonsd and daytonight for your reply. Your tips are excellent and very helpful. I really appreciate for it. Now, I feel more confident for the 4 exams coming on next week. :tku:

My advice is not to try to memorize the info. Just understand it and know how to apply it. After one of my lectures I go over my notes and try to figure out what questions they will ask- priority, assessment, pt teaching, drug side effects, ect.
Sample Question-
Which patient is most at risk for developing pneumonia?
A. 19 y/o female in nursing school
B. 24 y/o traveling abroad
C. 56 y/o male taking corticosteroids
D. 83 y/o female hospitalized for pressure ulcers
To answer this you have to know risk factors for pneumonia and also think about immune function. Hopefully you can narrow it down to c and d.
C- no risk factors but steroids supress immune function
D- correct answer because pt has multiple risk factors (age, hospitalized, and mobilization) and aslo you can surmize that she is not very mobile b/c of pressure ulcers
