Hi Everyone,
I am working on my RN-BSN and I am taking a Community Health Nursing Class and we are required to get some answers from a few of these questions, if any of you don't mind to help me out for this interview it would be great!!! Thanks so much!!!
1. What do school nurses does on a daily/weekly basis?
2. What problems are ongoing?
3. My National Health Objective is Childhood Obesity, is that something school nurses are dealing with on a daily basis? What have you done or what is being done about it?
4. What kinds of policies are there at the school related to children's health?
5. Is there a coordinated school health program?
6. How does the school nurse coordinate with parents and others in the community?

This thread was long ago, but here goes...........
1. Daily basis- triage sick kids, give medication, oversee immunization compliance, respond to emergencies on campus, input shots, communicate with staff and parents via email and phone, oversee procedures, paperwork that pertain to medicine, shots, health conditions, vision, hearing and scoliosis and possible referrals.
2. Problems ongoing are minor and major injuries, sickness,(stomach, throats, etc.), flu viruses, colds, stomach viruses, pink eye, allergies.
3. No I don't deal with Obesity on a daily basis. I usually see it when I do scolisos screening around November. The school has hired a Health Coordinator to oversee implementing physical education and the laws that govern school compliance and obesity. I myself usually investigate with students as time allow on how the parent is dealing with this problem in regards to diet and exercise and a physician.
4. There are health policies mandated by the State Law and also the Nurse Board. Usually disabilities and Special Education have more specific rules for health problems. The diabetic students here have a 504 plan in place to allow extra time and modifications because of their condition. Other students that I deal with have a doctor's letter that I request on file and specifics for the current school year that allow permissions/exclusions or for restrictions.
5. Yes there are many and they are constanting being changed and updated. Vision and Hearing Screenings. Scoliosis Screenings. Other programs that work closely with this are vision (Lion's Club-for low income), diabetic walk-a-thon, dental screenings, Girl and Boy talks (Birds and Bees), Hand-Washing and Germ Talks for elementary. etc. Some are coordinated by the Health Coordinator, some by the Health Teacher and most by the nurse leaders.
6. They coordinate by School Health letters sent home, School Web-Sites, Mass School Telephone Recordings, and School Meetings.
Hope this helps. (a month late, sorry)
