Question regarding travel nursing

Hi there,

I've been a travel nurse for over three years now and if you haven't already sold your home, DON"T! As a traveller you need to have someplace to claim as a permanent residence in order to not be taxed on your housing through your travel company. A better resource for this topic would be Delphi Forums, under the health and wellness tab-check out Travel nurses and therapists. There are nurses that have been travelling years as well as nurses that are also tax preparers.

I agree with Mikki. You will want a permanent residence. You get huge tax breaks if you do. Plus, while you will love traveling, there is no place like home! Unless you just really can't afford payments or are worried about something happening to the house while you travel, I would hang onto it for tax reasons if nothing else. Good luck. THanks for the info and tips. I was going to rent a room from one of my friends in NC that lives close by after I sold my house. As it is right now, the market is very slow and the house may not sell anyway. It's only been on the market for 3 months.

Would I receive the same tax benefit if I rented?

I think the general rule is if you maintain another residence and incur expenses there while you are gone, i.e., rent, utilities, maintenence, etc. I don't know if it matters if you rent or own, but you may have to have that clarified. I think they just want to see that you do have a permanent residence and you are having to incur new expenses for your job.

if you can get a realtor to rent and keep up repairs and also clear enough for house payment...you don't have to make any money off of it....you will be making an investment in the future and if you change your mind in the future you will have a place to return to...i thin you are in a win-win situation

Hi all,
I just joined the site. I have been compiling data over the past year for travel nursing for which company, what assignment, and what to do about selling my house.
As of right now I have decided to sell my house, however, the market where I live in NC is rather slow. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on maintaining a house while traveling or renting one while away. Or if the better option would be to sit tight and wait for it to sell.

if you don't maintain a tax base then it is not traveling. makes a BIG difference
